Developed On Demand - Flexible Custom Industry Training

Requests for customized training courses have been on the rise at the Energy Training Centre at Great Plains College. In addition to regularly scheduled public courses, the Energy Training Centre has developed and provided customized training to businesses throughout the province.

“We are always looking at ways to partner with industry and be flexible for employers that have specific needs. We invite all businesses to take advantage of our offerings and we welcome the opportunity to make the training work for the employer, either in our classroom or at their site at a time that works for them”, says Willi McCorriston, Energy Training Centre Director.

One of the largest employers in Biggar, SK , Prairie Malt Limited, requested a custom Aerial Lift Training (Man Lift) course to ensure their safety codes were being met.  In response, the Energy Training Centre tailored a custom course for their needs.

The one-day Man Lift course is essentially the Power Mobile Equipment course but was customized to an Aerial Lift. The course consists of five hours of theory plus practical training for each participant on the equipment the company wishes certification in.

“It is critical to Prairie Malt Ltd. to provide a safe work environment for our employees and to meet all government regulations.  Teaming with Great Plains College allows Prairie Malt Ltd. to meet these goals by providing certified training such as Safe Operation of Man Lifts,” says Brian Ellard, Food & Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator, Cargill Malt.

Two courses were arranged for Prairie Malt by Cindy Keith, Program Coordinator at the Biggar Campus, and training was successfully completed on a 25 ‘ Genie Man Lift, and a 45' Articulating Boom. Another company Prairie Malt works with, Chase 14 Welding also sent trainees to the course.
