    You will gain the skills necessary to counsel individuals and groups, develop and administer programs, empower community groups, conduct social research, analyze programs, policies and issues and develop and implement problem-solving strategies. The program is generalist in approach and will prepare you to work with minority and disadvantaged groups in urban, rural and remote areas.

    Social workers help people, organizations and communities develop skills and resources they need to enhance social functioning, and respond to social needs and issues such as unemployment, racism and poverty. They may be employed by hospitals, school boards, social service agencies, child welfare organizations, correctional facilities, community agencies, employee assistance programs and Aboriginal band councils or they may work in private practice.

    The average salary for a social worker in Saskatchewan was $65,478, based on a 40-hour work week, according to the provincial government’s 2013 Saskatchewan Wage survey.


    • Pre-Social Work (year 1) — Gr. 12 with 65% in five required subjects; English language arts A30 & B30; 30-level math or science; 30-level social science, language or fine arts; and an approved additional 30-level course

    There is a two-stage application process for a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

    Year 1: Contact a Great Plains College student adviser and they will work with you to complete the U of R undergraduate application for Pre-Social Work. You must also apply to Great Plains College.

    Year 2:  Apply to the U of R through the Bachelor of Social Work application process.

    • You are required to have completed a minimum of 30 university credit hours which must include, English 100, Indigenous studies 100, Psychology 101, Sociology 100.
    • Minimum 65% average in courses contributing to the Bachelor of Social Work degree

    Apply as a full-time student before April 30, you may be eligible for a $500 – 5,000 Entrance Scholarship. Apply before June 30, if you are in Grade 11 and have a 70% average, you may be eligible for a $1,000 Early Entrance Award.
