SWIFT CURRENT, SK – Great Plains College, in partnership with the Southwest Literacy Committee (SWLC), will join communities around the world in celebrating International Literacy Day (ILD) on September 8, marking 60 years of raising awareness about the importance of literacy.
Since its inception in 1967, ILD has served to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and advance the literacy agenda toward a more literate, equitable and sustainable society. This year’s UNESCO theme is: “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.”
This year’s theme emphasizes the critical role literacy plays in building inclusive societies, promoting a sustainable future and expanding economic opportunities globally.
“Literacy is a fundamental human right for all,” states UNESCO. Functional literacy is key to empowerment, well-being, and civic participation in today’s digital world. Yet, a 2023 UNESCO report revealed that 754 million people globally lack functional literacy skills.
The Southwest Literacy Committee continues to champion literacy in all its forms – reading, writing, numeracy, and digital skills – recognizing its role in building healthy communities and resilient economies. The committee supports lifelong learning by offering family and early years literacy programs across the southwest region, including programs for families with children aged 0-5 that help spark a love of reading and learning from an early age.
“Literacy empowers people, increases their well-being, and enables full participation in society,” said Bula Ghosh, Southwest Literacy Committee member and literacy coordinator at Great Plains College. “As we embrace literacy in different modalities, we must ensure no one is left behind. Learning opportunities must be equitable and accessible – locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally.”
In celebration of International Literacy Day, the Southwest Literacy Committee is inviting everyone to the grand opening of the Story Trail Project in Kiwanis Park on September 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. We encourage everyone in our communities to take time to visit the Story Trail with family and friends, discover the joy of reading together, and celebrate a lifelong culture of learning.
Great Plains College, the Southwest Literacy Committee, and member organizations will be celebrating ILD in a variety of ways to create awareness and understanding about this important day. The City of Swift Current has also agreed to proclaim September 7-13, 2026, as International Literacy Week.
