Great Plains College awards over $231,000 at fall scholarship receptions

Wednesday, November 12, 2025

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – Great Plains College is pleased to announce over $231,000 in Entrance Scholarships, bursaries and awards were provided to 155 deserving students this fall.

“Awarding over $231,000 in scholarships this fall is far more than a statistic – it represents real opportunities for 155 students to continue their education,” said Brad Mahon, president and CEO at Great Plains College. “Financial barriers can be overwhelming, and scholarships help remove those obstacles so students can focus on learning and achieving their goals. We’re proud to have invested nearly $2.5 million in scholarships and awards over the years, ensuring thousands of students have the support they need to succeed.”

Highlights from this fall’s scholarship and awards distribution include:

  • Over $151,000 awarded to students at the Swift Current Campus
  • More than $80,000 awarded to students at the Maple Creek, Martensville, Kindersley and Warman Campuses
  • $10,000 in International Student Awards was distributed to second-year diploma students at the Warman Campus
  • 11 Adult Basic Education Persistence Awards will be presented to students in Kindersley, Martensville, and Maple Creek throughout December, including three Living Sky Casino Indigenous Adult Basic Education awards
  • Additional scholarships will be awarded in the winter semester to an estimated 32 students, providing an additional $40,000 in scholarships this academic year, including $19,500 to 13 Practical Nursing students in Biggar

Two new bursaries were also announced and awarded in 2025-26, including the Barbara Lindsay Practical Nursing Bursary, which will provide two $2,500 bursaries to Practical Nursing students annually for the next 10 years, and the Great Plains College Board Bursary which will award a minimum of one $500 bursary annually.

“Our scholarship program reflects the strength of our communities. Year-after-year, donors step forward to invest in students’ futures, and that commitment creates a lasting impact – not just for the students, but for the region as a whole,” added Mahon. “As National Philanthropy Day approaches on November 15, we want to extend an extra thank you to our donors for their ongoing support.”
