Great Plains College awards winter semester scholarships

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

SWIFT CURRENT – Great Plains College held its Swift Current Campus Winter Scholarship Reception on February 26. Entrance Scholarships were awarded to 15 deserving students who started their administrative assistant, electrician and university programs this winter.

The college boasts one of the most competitive scholarship programs among regional colleges in the province. Since 2009, more than $2 million has been distributed to students enrolled in full-time student loan-eligible programs, including approximately $182,000 in the 2017-18 academic year. Of that, 128,000 has been awarded to students at Swift Current Campus.

“It’s always an exciting day when we can award our hard-working recipients with scholarships that will help ease the cost of their post-secondary education,” said Carrie Voysey, director of communications and development at Great Plains College. “Our scholarship receptions are also an opportunity to thank the donors who so generously contribute to Great Plains College’s scholarship program, which directly supports so many of our students.”

A special scholarship in honour of the late Basanti Ghosh, mother of community leader and college employee, Bula Ghosh, was also awarded at the February 26 reception. Diane Entz, a first year University student that transitioned from Adult Basic Education, was the recipient of the Basanti Ghosh Memorial Scholarship. “My mother would be pleased that you are receiving this award,” explained Bula, “because you are an avid reader, just like my mother was.”

Applications for 2018-19 Entrance Scholarships are now being accepted. Students are automatically considered for an Entrance Scholarship of $500-$5,000 when they apply to a full-time student loan-eligible program before the April 30, 2018 scholarship deadline (for September-entry programs).

Grade 11 students with at least a 70 per cent average are also eligible for an additional Early Entrance Award of $1,000 when they apply to any full-time student loan-eligible program before June 30, 2018.
