Regional Safety Committee contribution serves as catalyst for Great Plains College scholarships

Thursday, July 26, 2018

SWIFT CURRENT-In support of students and safety, the Regional Safety Committee (RSC) of Swift Current has donated $1,500 toward entrance scholarships at Great Plains College.

“We are pleased to continue our support of students at Great Plains College,” explained RSC chair and construction owner of Elite Metal Builders, Kellie Ebner. “We want to promote workplace safety, which is important in every profession, and encourage individuals to take advantage of the educational options we have here.”

On May 8, the RSC hosted a North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) luncheon and awareness event, with guest speaker Gord Moker from Mission Zero, at Market Square in Swift Current. Luncheon tickets were sold, along with raffle tickets, to raise funds. Over $2,600 was raised. A donation of $1,500 was presented to Great Plains College and approximately $1,000 was donated to Threads for Life, a charity dedicated to supporting families after a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease.

Additionally, the RSC and Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association (SCSA) held Lunch Box Talk information sessions and demos for approximately 50 students in Grades 10-12 from the Swift Current Comprehensive High School and 25 students from Maverick School.

“We are excited to receive this contribution,” said Lyla Cooper, safety training coordinator for Great Plains College. “It’s important that students are aware and knowledgeable when it comes to being safe in their chosen profession. As a college, we place a lot of emphasis on injury and illness prevention. It is encouraging to know that the RSC and Swift Current as a whole, support this.”

RSC wishes to thank the following partners involved with the NAOSH luncheon: Bacoda Crane, Bumper to Bumper, Dental Arts Clinic, Elite Metal Builders, Golden West Broadcasting, J & S Tire, Len’s Plumbing and Heating, New Family Chiropractic with Dr. Rhonda Corrigan/R.C. Chiropractic Professional Corp., Pioneer Coop, SCSA, SIGA, Silverline Construction, Swift Current Building Supplies, Westman Steel and Winmar. They would also like to thank SouthWest Homes and Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce for assisting with the promotion of the event. RSC hopes to hold a similar event in 2019 during NAOSH week (May 5-11).
