Regional Safety Committee supports Great Plains College students

Thursday, July 6, 2017

SWIFT CURRENT: In an effort to promote and support safety in the workplace, the Regional Safety Committee (RSC) of Swift Current has donated $500 toward entrance scholarships at Great Plains College.

“No matter what the profession, workplace safety is important,” explained RSC co-chair and construction owner of Elite Metal Builders, Kellie Ebner. “We want to encourage individuals to take advantage of the educational options we have here in Swift Current and in turn, become more aware and knowledgeable when it comes to being safe and preventing injury and illness.”

In May, the RSC hosted a North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) luncheon at Eagles Hall. Luncheon tickets were sold at the door, along with raffle tickets, to raise funds. Over $700 was raised. A donation of $500 was presented to Great Plains College and about $240 was donated to Threads for Life, a charity dedicated to supporting families after a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease.

“The college is thrilled to receive this contribution. We place a lot of emphasis on safety training and ensuring that students are very aware of their chosen field’s occupational hazards,” said Lyla Cooper, skills and safety training coordinator for Great Plains College. “It is encouraging to know that the RSC and Swift Current as a whole, value this and place importance on it.”

Partners involved with the NAOSH luncheon included: Elite Metal Builders, Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association, Silverline Construction, Dickson Agencies, Innovation Credit Union, AJ Mechanical and New Family Chiropractic with Dr. Rhonda Corrigan/R.C. Chiropractic Professional Corp. RSC hopes to hold a similar event in 2018 during NAOSH week (May 6-12).
