Great Plains College SunDogs host A Dogs’ Breakfast

Friday, February 9, 2018

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The Great Plains College SunDogs hosted a full house at the Living Sky Casino Sky Centre for the inaugural Dogs’ Breakfast in support of the SunDogs Athletics program. The January 31 event brought student-athletes, coaches, educators and the business community together for a breakfast and to hear keynote speaker, Karl Subban.

Mr. Subban brought humour, stories and words of wisdom to the crowd of 230. His address focused on the importance of believing in potential—in yourself, in others, and especially in children and youth.

“Karl Subban was a perfect fit for our first-ever Dogs’ Breakfast event,” said Mona Patterson, SunDogs Athletics and recreation coordinator. “His stories and experiences from his time in the education system and the hockey world related to everyone in the room. We’re grateful to Mr. Subban for making the trip out to Swift Current and entertaining everyone who came out to support the program.”

Subban is the former school principal in one of Toronto’s toughest neighbourhoods, father of five children, including three NHL-drafted players (PK, Malcolm and Jordan), and author of “How We Did It: The Subban Plan for Success in Hockey, School and Life”. He’s dedicated his life to helping others achieve their potential—to be better in their careers and as people.

The event raised approximately $6,500 for the SunDogs Athletics program through ticket sales, a raffle and sponsorships. The proceeds will be used for team operations and athletic scholarships.

“We can’t say a big enough ‘thanks’ to all of the sponsors and to everyone that came out to the event or bought raffle tickets. As Karl emphasized, you all are making a difference and your generosity is directly supporting the future of our athletes.” Patterson commented.

Event sponsors include Mercator Financial, Living Sky Casino, Pattison Agriculture, Saskatchewan Blue Cross, South West Terminal, Sports Trader, Stitch Master, Prairie Post and Magic 97.1.

The Great Plains College SunDogs compete in the Prairie Athletic Conference. Since 2006, the program boasts three provincial championships, seven league and provincial awards, five Coach of the Year awards, six Battle of the Southwest championships and 17 provincial All-star Athlete awards.
