Seventh Annual Carhartts and Caviar Welding Showcase and Auction continues to impress

Monday, March 11, 2019

SWIFT CURRENT – In front of a sold out crowd, Great Plains College was thrilled to raise over $31,000 at the Seventh Annual Carhartts & Caviar Welding Showcase and Auction presented by S3 Enterprises.

From indoor and outdoor furniture pieces to custom metal art, the college’s Welding students, their instructor, alumni and local businesses came together to create 13 unique pieces that were auctioned off to raise money for the Welding program and scholarships.

“This event has become an important part of our Welding program. It gives students a chance to practice their skills by creating some custom pieces and to showcase their work to friends, family and potential employers,” said Jared McKenzie, Welding instructor at Great Plains College. “We have a lot of fun preparing for this event every year and hope everyone who came out enjoyed the evening.”

This year’s pieces included a garden gate, a bench built from old hot rod parts, rustic wine racks and a cowboy-themed fire pit.

The mystery piece, a beautiful coffee table designed and built by One Prairie Craftsman, instructor Jared McKenzie and alumna Amanda Kyle, was the top selling piece of the evening, selling for $2,200. Close seconds include the industrial office desk built by Sandhills Welding, which raised $2,150, and a chair made from a 1953 Ford F3 truck built by the Welding class that went for $2,000.

“We can’t run an event like this for seven years without tremendous support from our sponsors and the community,” added Dianne Sletten, donor services coordinator at Great Plains College. “We can’t thank everyone enough for continuing to support this event and our Welding program year-after-year.”

Great Plains College would like to again thank all of the sponsors that made Carhartts and Caviar possible, including Presenting Sponsor S3 Enterprises and Hospitality Sponsor Nutrien Ag Solutions. The college would also like to give a special thanks to One Prairie Craftsman for his time and work on the mystery coffee table piece, and PDQ Autobody who helped finish the six pieces made by the Welding students.
