Course Description
This course shows workers how to work safely in and around Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) environments.

- Respiratory Protective Equipment
- Detection of H2S
- Initial Response Strategy
- Participants must be able to put on a mask and breathe under air.
- Participants must be able to participate in rescue drag techniques.
- For the skills assessment, students should wear sturdy footwear and clothing compatible with the activity and movement associated with rescue techniques and donning/doffing of an SCBA.
- Basic literacy and understanding in the language the course is being taught is required.
How it Works
Rather than attending a regular one-day course, students can save several hours by completing a two-part renewal! You just need a non-expired Energy Safety Canada H2S Alive certificate to qualify to complete the Blended Renewal!
Part 1 is a 3-hour, Energy Safety Canada online course.
Part 2 is a 30-minute Skills Assessment that must be completed with a certified instructor at Great Plains College.
How to Register
Students have two options
- Contact Great Plains College and ask them to purchase the $90 online course on your behalf. This way, both portions of the course will be on one bill/invoice and allows our clients to pay for the Renewal with other methods besides just credit card.
- By purchasing the online course through Great Plains College, you will be charged for both the online portion of the course and the Skills Assessment, so make sure to complete your Skills Assessment with us.
- Purchase the $90 online course on your own, directly through Energy Safety Canada by clicking THIS LINK.
- By purchasing the online course directly through Energy Safety Canada, students may book their Skills Assessment with any provider they choose, including Great Plains College.
THEN:
Once you complete and pass the online portion of the Renewal, contact Great Plains College to book your Skills Assessment to earn your 3-year certification. You will need to provide your Energy Safety Canada student ID when booking your Skills Assessment to confirm that you are qualified to complete the Skills Assessment.
Skills Assessments are available at the conclusion of every regular H2S Alive course (approximately 4:30 PM)

Additional Information:
- Students will need their Energy Safety Canada Account credentials to purchase and/or access the online course. If you do not know your account login credentials, please contact Energy Safety Canada at 1-800-667-5557 to obtain. If you have ever taken H2S Alive before, you will automatically have an Energy Safety Canada account. Don’t create a new account!
- You must achieve at least 70% on the online portion’s Examination to qualify to take the Skills Assessment.
- You must pass the online portion before you can book your Skills Assessment.
- If any student doesn’t have access to a computer, students may complete the online portion of the course at Great Plains College. An additional $23 is applicable for utilizing College computer lab to complete the online course.
- Online portion of the course must be purchased AND accessed by the student PRIOR TO the student’s H2S expiration date.
- Students have 90 days to complete their online course from time of purchase.
- Students have 90 days to complete their Skills Assessment from date of online course completion.
- The time limits to complete the online course and the Skills Assessment (as above) do not change or extend one’s current H2S certification’s expiration date.
- Successful completion of the Skills Assessment will result in a Certificate of Completion that is valid for three years.
- Should a student be unsuccessful in either the online theory or skills assessment on the first attempt, they will be required to attend classroom delivery of H2S Alive to achieve their certification.
