STATEMENT: Great Plains College Board Chair removed from position

Friday, April 30, 2021

Great Plains College has worked hard to develop and build positive relationships with Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan. This is exemplified in our positive actions on campus and with local Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities and organizations over the years.

Unfortunately, the sureness of this commitment has been shaken. On Monday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 27, the Board Chair of Great Plains College attended the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) 2021 Virtual Conference. While participating in two of the forums, the Chair produced comments in the “chat” that were offensive, inappropriate and deemed hurtful by participants and CICan President and CEO, Denise Amyot.

The comments on April 26 and 27 do not reflect the views of our college staff, management, or Board of Governors. The comments go against everything we stand for as an organization with respect to equity, diversity and inclusion. As such, the Board Chair has been removed from the position.

On behalf of the Board of Governors of Great Plains College, we apologize for the disrespectful behaviour that was displayed and the division caused by these offensive statements.

We continue to be devoted to engaging the college community in educational opportunities and conversations regarding Indigenous history, culture and world views; and, to engaging the broader community on shared matters of Indigenous and non-Indigenous concern. We hope any damage caused by these statements can be mended and we can continue to move forward in a positive direction.

Cindy Lowe, Acting Board of Governors Chair

David Keast, President & CEO
