Practical Nursing

Through this Practical Nursing diploma program you will receive the training you need to write the exam to become a licensed practical nurse in Saskatchewan.

Entrance Requirements

  • Grade 12 with a minimum overall average of 65% in the following five subjects: English Language Arts A30; English Language Arts B30; one of Foundations of Math 30, Workplace and Apprenticeship Math 30, or Pre Calculus 30; one of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, or Physics 30; and one of Social Studies 30, History 30, or Native Studies 30
  • English Language Requirement
  • Up-to-date immunization record and that meets program immunization requirements*
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks*
  • Current Standard First Aid and Heart and Stroke Foundation CPR. The required course for CPR is Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)*
  • Transferring, Lifting and Repositioning (TLR) certification*
  • 2015 WHMIS Globally Harmonized System (GHS) certification*
  • Evidence of current N95 respirator mask testing for two masks

*Required upon admission to the program.

What You Will Learn

Receive the training required to write the exam to become a licensed practical nurse in Saskatchewan. Through a combination of hands-on classroom learning and practicums, you will receive clinical experience in medicine, surgery, pharmacology, acute care, obstetrics, pediatrics, long-term and rehabilitative care, health promotion and illness prevention. You will be highly skilled and well prepared to write your licensure exam upon graduation.

Career Opportunities

As a graduate, you may find employment in medical, surgical, maternal/child or pediatric units at acute care hospitals, rehabilitation or palliative care units, medical centres, or community, home care and extended care facilities.

Earning Potential

In 2023, the wage estimates for licensed practical nurses in Saskatchewan was $30.00-$38.00 per hour, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Immigration and Career Training. Employees may earn more or less depending on their employer, location, training, experience and hours worked.

Entrance Scholarship Deadlines

Apply before April 30 for the Kindersley or Swift Current program, or before October 31 for the Biggar program, and you will automatically be considered for a $500-$5,000 Entrance Scholarship.
