Course Description
Did you know that when you operate an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) or UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) for work purposes (with the exception of farming operations), the training you are required to receive must cover all the applicable legislation found in the Saskatchewan Employment Act, The OH&S Saskatchewan Regulations, and the All Terrain Vehicles Act, Saskatchewan? When used for employment purposes, ATVs and UTVs are considered Powered Mobile Equipment and fall under the regulations outlined in Table 11 of the OH&S Saskatchewan Regulations.
The ATV/UTV Rider course that many have come to know is not sufficient training for employment purposes and could put you and your company in legal jeopardy if a serious accident or fatality were to occur.
This one-day ATV/UTV course meets those standards and provides you with the training you actually require for your job!
In this course, we spend the first part of the course covering all the applicable legislation to ensure employers, contractors, and workers understand their obligations and legal responsibilities when operating an ATV or UTV in their work or supervising one who is using an ATV or UTV in their work.
Students must obtain 60% or higher on the written exam to ensure competency.
The last part of the course will focus on the outdoor practical training to ensure:
- Required PPE
- Required Equipment & Documents
- Safe loading and unloading onto trailers, pickup trucks, and other platforms
- Proper tie-down equipment and procedure
- Pre-trip inspection
- Hazard and Risk Assessment
- Vehicle Maintenance
- Fire prevention
- First Aid preparedness
- Emergency maneuvers
- Weight Distribution (Active Rider Procedure)
- Obstacles
- Traversing Hills (ascending, descending, and side grades)
- Braking
- Gear selection
- And more!
- Students (upon successful written and practical assessment) will only earn Operator certification in the specific type of vehicle (ATV or UTV) in which they completed their practical assessment.
- Students who are not successful in demonstrating the theory and/or operational competency required will earn a Trainee certificate, where students must obtain additional hours of operation time under supervision to trade in their Trainee certificate for an Operator certificate.
- Trainees have three years to earn their additional practical hours or the student must take the entire course again.
- Students must provide their own ATV or UTV for the course. It must be in good working condition. Please keep it loaded on your platform, pickup, or trailer and strapped down upon arrival.
- Students must wear PPE including a helmet and goggles, coveralls or long pants and a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, and boots that come up past the ankle.
- Students should consider the weather forecasted for the season and the day, including the use of mosquito repellent.
