Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO)

In this HEO program, you will earn Powered Mobile Equipment (PME) certification on three pieces of heavy equipment.

Entrance Requirements

  • A current/valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Students must be at least 17 years of age, be physically fit and have full range of body motion
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
  • English language requirement

Note: if you do not meet these entrance requirements, special admission options may be available.
During the practical work projects component, training will be approximately 10 hours per day.

What You Will Learn

In the Heavy Equipment Operator program, you will gain the knowledge, skills and certifications needed to operate heavy equipment safely and confidently in real‑world work environments.

Equipment Training & Certification

You will earn Power Mobile Equipment (PME) certification on three pieces of heavy equipment through a blend of classroom instruction, simulator training and hands‑on experience on an active job site. Equipment options include:

  • Mandatory certification on the rock truck
  • Training on two additional pieces of equipment, selected from:
    • Grader
    • Dozer
    • Front‑end loader
    • Excavator

Hands‑On Training

Hands‑on training is a key part of the Heavy Equipment Operator program. Students gain practical experience operating equipment on real job sites while contributing to community and industry projects. This applied learning helps build confidence, develop job‑ready skills and reflect real workplace expectations. Training projects have included road work, land clearing for a skate park and a community parks, construction of a retention pond for a soccer field, and work at a mine site.

Safety & Industry Certifications

In addition to earning PME certification on three pieces of equipment, you will also complete a number of industry‑recognized safety certifications, including:

  • Safety Construction Orientation Training (SCOT)
  • Ground Disturbance (Global)
  • Fall Protection
  • Fire Extinguishing
  • First Aid / CPR / AED

This comprehensive combination of classroom learning, simulator use, hands‑on training and safety certification prepares graduates for employment across multiple sectors, including construction, energy and agriculture.

Career Opportunities

Heavy equipment operators operate heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, airports, gas and oil pipelines, tunnels, buildings and other structures, in surface mining and quarrying activities, and in material handling work. They are employed by construction companies, heavy equipment contractors, public works departments and pipeline, logging, cargo-handling and other companies. They may also act as independent business owners.

Earning Potential

In 2024, the wage estimates for heavy-duty equipment operators (except crane) in Saskatchewan was $24.72-$37.91 per hour, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Immigration and Career Training. Employees may earn more or less depending on their employer, location, size of company, level of training, experience, and hours worked.

  • Required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) –  Hard hat; steel-toed boots (above ankle); coveralls; work gloves; safety glasses; hearing protection; reflective safety vest are required. Estimated cost: $300-$400
